Chikungunya in the Caribbean: An Epidemic in the Making

member of the Togaviridae family, infection with the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) has emerged as a major public health concern, resulting in outbreaks of fever and debilitating arthralgia in the Caribbean and globally [1]. The first autochthonous (native) transmission of CHIKV in the Caribbean was confirmed in December 2013 on the French island of Saint Martin [2]. Rapid spread and local transmission of CHIKV occurred in the Caribbean and the Americas within 9 months
